The Karkala police have arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of copper sheets from Parashurama Theme Park situated on Umikal Betta. The accused have been identified as Arif (37) and Abdul Hamid (32), both natives of Mangaluru.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on January 3. Taking advantage of the site's closure—which happened due to alleged irregularities regarding the park's statue—the miscreants stripped copper sheets from the roof of the structure. Acting on the complaint, the police formed three special teams and conducted search operations across Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The investigation led to the arrest of the duo.
The police have successfully recovered stolen property valued at approximately Rs. 45,000 from the accused. This includes 51 kg of copper sheets, two ceiling fans, a goods auto-rickshaw, and a motorcycle used to execute the crime.Meanwhile, Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar launched a scathing attack on the state government via social media regarding the incident. In a tweet, he alleged that the thieves were "Congress brothers" and accused the Congress of deliberately allowing the theme park to fall into disrepair.
"The roof thieves are Congress brothers! Congress ensured the theme park went to waste," Kumar stated. Drawing a controversial parallel, he wrote, "If Ghazni, Ghori, Khilji, and the Mughals broke India's centers of devotion, the roof thieves are their descendants." He further criticized the Congress leadership for stalling the construction, claiming they did not want Parashurama's legacy in the coastal region. The MLA predicted that the offense to Hindu sentiments and the obstruction of tourism would mark the beginning of the Congress party's downfall.
