Nanjundeshwara Layout (ward 196), located within JP Nagar 5th Phase in South Bengaluru, enjoys a strategic advantage due to its location between Bannerghatta Road and Kanakapura Road, providing residents with easy access to two of the city’s key economic corridors, including major healthcare and IT hubs. However, despite its otherwise calm and residential character, the layout is facing a growing number of civic issues. During a recent inspection by News Trail, garbage dumping and parking-related problems were observed to be among the most pressing concerns, along with several other civic challenges.

Unplanned road mapsThe area’s narrow, tree-lined roads, while adding to its charm, have become a major concern for traffic movement and parking. Several goods vehicles, cars, and two-wheelers were found parked on footpaths and along the roads, with a few abandoned vehicles also occupying public space. Many internal roads leading into residential pockets are extremely narrow and congested, mirroring the closely packed residential infrastructure in the area. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) must inspect the layout, penalise illegal parking, and remove abandoned vehicles to ease both pedestrian and vehicular movement. Encroachment by street vendors, small shops, and construction debris on footpaths and roads has also become a concern, which was observed especially on Rizwan Masjid Road.

Dim lighting
“The current has been fluctuating, and when the electricity goes out, it takes a long time to return. BESCOM people come and fix it, but it is only a temporary solution,” said Parvathamma, a long-time resident of the layout. Another resident, Thimmakka, pointed out that many streetlights in the area are either dim or non-functional, “Many streetlights are either very dim or not working at all. Since this is a residential area where children play outside, and elderly people walk in the evenings, it can be dangerous without proper lighting”, she said. Open garbage dumping remains another major issue, with several spots across the layout littered with plastic waste and even discarded furniture. The GBA must conduct a cleanliness drive along with public awareness initiatives that are urgently needed in the area.
