Amalodbhavi Nagar’s parking nightmare

Amalodbhavi Nagar (under ward 187) is a quiet residential pocket in South Bengaluru, situated within the vicinity of JP Nagar 7th Phase and Panduranga Nagar. The locality lies close to Bannerghatta Main Road, a key arterial route that provides access to major employment centres and the technology corridors along the Outer Ring Road. Nearby are prominent institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), along with established healthcare providers including Fortis and Apollo Hospitals.

Parking woes everywhere
During a visit to Amalodbhavi Nagar, News Trail found that the locality is grappling with several civic issues, reflecting challenges seen across many parts of the city due to inadequate planning and rapid urbanisation. Illegal parking on both sides of the road has emerged as a major concern. Most houses in the area were constructed years ago without designated parking spaces, forcing residents to park their vehicles on the streets. This has led to frequent obstruction of vehicular movement and has also encroached upon footpaths, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate safely.

Amalodbhavi Nagar Road issues
In addition, several residential buildings along Amalodbhavi Nagar Road appear to violate GBA building spacing norms, with structures built in close proximity to one another. This raises serious safety concerns, particularly in the event of emergencies such as fires. The road itself is narrow; although footpaths have been constructed, they are often occupied by parked vehicles, abandoned furniture, trucks, and auto-rickshaws, limiting their intended use.

Congestion and broken roads
Although the residents interviewed did not explicitly raise these concerns, the area continues to face additional civic challenges. These include inadequate street lighting, with several dimly lit lanes contributing to minor accidents and heightening security concerns, particularly for those returning home late at night. While the locality is relatively quieter than major commercial hubs, residents on the periphery report increasing traffic congestion.

This appears to stem from the gradual spillover of commercial activity from nearby JP Nagar 7th Phase and Bannerghatta Road into adjoining residential zones. Furthermore, the stretch of Bannerghatta Road adjoining Amalodbhavi Nagar is in a deteriorated state, with broken and uneven surfaces posing risks to commuters. The presence of loose jelly stones scattered across the roadway adds to the hazard, increasing the likelihood of accidents and making daily travel unsafe for motorists.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) must take cognisance of the issue and undertake necessary road repairs at the earliest. The GBA must also undertake a comprehensive inspection of the area to assess these concerns and implement corrective measures. Regular sanitation drives are essential, as multiple garbage blackspots were observed in different parts of the locality, affecting overall hygiene and living conditions.
