Bengaluru - With Bengaluru witnessing a steady decline in green cover and rising temperatures, a new citizen-driven initiative focused on urban tree health was launched on Sunday. The programme seeks to address the root causes of urban heat by promoting tree care and conservation at the grassroots level. Conceived by Tree Doctor Vijay Nishanth in collaboration with Rego, the initiative adopts a unique approach by selecting an entire street to assess tree stress and administer necessary treatment.

It also emphasises active public participation, encouraging residents to take responsibility for maintaining urban greenery. The drive is scheduled to be held once every 15 days to build sustained awareness and engagement. The inaugural event took place along HAL Old Madras Road, where over 100 volunteers participated in sessions on urban forestry, biodiversity and the importance of community involvement in preserving green spaces.

As part of the effort, water bowls were placed on trees and in nearby parks to support birds and other urban wildlife during the summer months. Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Sudarshan joined the initiative, extending official support and underlining the importance of tree health care in strengthening urban ecosystems. Volunteers were trained in practical techniques such as improving soil health around tree roots and ensuring proper watering methods, including loosening compacted soil before irrigation.

During the inspection, termite infestations and mealybug attacks were identified on several trees and promptly treated using termiticides and organic insecticides. Participants expressed enthusiasm for the hands-on approach, with many stepping forward to carry out treatments themselves after the training session. Shankar H R, Managing Director of Rego, praised the initiative and expressed interest in expanding it to cover a wider stretch. Officials reiterated that sustained efforts in tree care are crucial to preserving Bengaluru’s liveability and ecological balance
