Shivakumar celebrates birthday amid leadership change buzz in Karnataka

Bengaluru,

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday celebrated his 64th birthday, amid buzz over leadership change in the state. The state Congress chief was greeted by party leaders, workers, legislators and ministers at his residence here. Earlier in the day, he also cut a cake with his supporters. He was also blessed by a battery of priests with the chanting of Vedic hymns. Supporters of Shivakumar have been insisting on his elevation in line with a reported power-sharing agreement with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah when the party won the 2023 Assembly elections.

Some had even claimed that "sweet news" is expected by May 15, on his birthday. The Deputy CM, however, did not wish to respond to a question whether he expects "good news" from the Congress high command, as the elections to four states and one union territory have been completed. Speaking to reporters, he expressed displeasure against banners being erected at various places in the city, wishing on his birthday, despite his request against it, and warning of action against those indulging in such acts.

Some banners even called him "next chief minister." "I wanted to avoid this (people gathering). I'm going to Thiruchendur (in Tamil Nadu) along with my family members. Party workers were waiting midnight to wish me. Also in the morning, again, my friends, leaders, legislators and ministers were waiting. So I'm leaving late. I couldn't avoid their love, confidence, wishes and blessings," Shivakumar said.

He said he had requested not to put banners wishing for his birthday and also had warned that cases will be registered against those indulging in such acts, but still they have put. "About 50 per cent of banners have been removed. I have personally got them removed at some places, but still some have put due to their affection. It is wrong. I have asked the corporation authorities to remove them immediately. The BJP has also put banners about their leaders. It is also wrong. Despite strict rules, we have not been able to avoid illegal banners. This is not right, we have to keep Bengaluru city clean," he added.
