BMRCL told to probe metro service disruptions over past three years: Tejasvi Surya

Bengaluru,

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Wednesday said the chief commissioner of railway safety had directed the BMRCL to investigate service disruptions over the past three years and submit a report on the corrective measures. The development comes days after Surya wrote to the commissioner of railway safety, highlighting the urgent need for safety and accountability in Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited operations following the disruption of metro services on the Purple Line on June 23.

On the social media platform X, the BJP MP also shared a response from Janak Kumar Garg, Chief Commissioner of Rail Safety and Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (Southern Circle). In his letter dated June 29, Garg said BMRCL had also been advised to conduct an audit of the effectiveness of the operational and maintenance aspects of the metro railway system.

"Based on my request, the chief commissioner of rail safety has directed BMRCL to investigate the train service disruptions over the last three years and submit a report on the corrective measures taken," Surya said. He said passenger safety and convenience must be BMRCL's highest priority, not an afterthought. "The state government must treat this with the urgency it deserves. As the authority responsible for the operation and maintenance of Namma Metro, the state government is fully accountable for ensuring safe, reliable and uninterrupted services," he said.

Surya said the 20 service disruptions reported since 2024 warranted immediate corrective action. "I urge @OfficialBMRCL to fix systemic failures and restore commuters' confidence," he said, while also tagging Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda in his post. The disruption on June 23 led to heavy crowding at several stations on the Purple Line, leaving many commuters stranded and forcing them to seek alternative modes of transport, including autorickshaws and app-based cabs, to reach their destinations.
