Several residents experience hair fall due to hard water

Over the past few decades, Bengaluru’s city authorities have raced to provide services to a rapidly expanding population. This expansion has created a large gap between the city’s laws and their implementation. Last year, the Karnataka government mandated that every apartment in the city must have a Cauvery water connection. However, residents, to their dismay, report that many apartments still do not.

“This seems to be an issue that people all over the city are facing. Living in Koramangala, we expected Cauvery water to be available, but we learnt that there were political issues that delayed the connection to our apartment, and only recently have we been getting a trickle of it. It’s not enough, and I have tried many things to soften the hard water, but none work. I am suffering from hair fall, and there are scaly deposits wherever there is a tap,” said Kubra Amaan, a resident of Koramangala.

Residents across the city report similar experiences. Having taken up the issue with their building managers, some residents were told that their apartments do have a connection; however, their experience suggests otherwise. “The person who manages our building told us that there is a Cauvery connection, but we still seem to be getting hard water. This is apparent in how the water feels. My hair has been affected, and there are deposits in our bathrooms, ” said Humera Azeez, a resident of Bommanahalli.

“The hard water really affects our hair, makes our skin rough , and the deposits on the taps and floors are also a huge concern for us,” said Nazneen Begum, a resident of Bengaluru. She added that she had not raised the issue with her apartment management but had been using products to soften the water. Such products are available in the market and include filtration systems and fixture attachments.

The cost of these products ranges from a few thousand rupees for a tap filter to more expensive systems that cover the entire home. BWSSB officials told NewsTrail that they have covered almost every building that has applied, encouraging other residents to register as well. An official stated that the process does not take long and that staff are ready to provide connections.
