Citizen provides water connection from his borewell to neighbourhood
Bengaluru
M.K. Adam, a resident of Kaval Byrasandra has been living in the area for most of his life. About two years ago, the municipal authorities cut open the road to provide water connections to the area. After finishing the work, the street was left untarred and unfinished. Residents grew tired of the daily struggle of navigating the bad roads and also complained of intermittent water supply. “They came and did the pipe work and they left the roads just like that. The roads are still like that, it’s been around two years.
Moreover, the Cauvery water doesn’t even come all the time, so people here were fed up. Adam, who we all know well, stepped in and said that he will provide additional water from the borewell,” said Younus, a resident of the area and worker in the project. A builder by trade, Adam had dug a borewell near his house and decided to con- nect the houses of the area to that source. “They had dug the roads and did not fix them afterwards. Because of that rats had started coming and we were facing many issues. There are about 230 people living here and we have given the connection to each and every one of them,” Adam said.
He informed News Trail that he had written to the authorities prior to start ing the work but no response came, hence, he decided to put his own money into it to help the neighbourhood. “I received a notice from BBMP about it, but I informed them that I had not done any road cutting and it was already like that,” Adam said. This particular work has been going on for several months, residents said. Moreover after the pipeline was set, the workers also concretized the road. “There is still other work to be done in the area. These electric poles have all these loose wires hanging, which are a danger to the public.
These sumps are full and nobody has bothered to fix it,” Adam said, pointing to the sumps in the area. Head of the Legal Cell of the North City Corporation stated that the work would be deemed legal if it was a BDA layout and did not have a connection. “It’s illegal to do pipeline work on public roads, even if the road was already dug up by authorities. If it’s a BDA layout and does not have a water connection or if it’s a private layout then they are allowed, but on public roads you can’t do that,” said Head of Legal Cell Chandrashekhar Patil.
