Traffic challenge needs more than signboards
Moodabidri is growing rapidly, and with the increase in population, commercial activity and movement of vehicles, the town’s traffic and park ing problems are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. One of the most troublesome stretches is the road from the Mooda bidri bus stand towards the Hanuman Temple, which has emerged as a major traffic black spot. The road experiences heavy movement through out the day, with buses, cars, two-wheelers, autorickshaws, delivery vehicles and pedestrians competing for limited road space.
Unregulated parking along the stretch further reduces the available carriageway, resulting in congestion, particularly during peak hours. A local resident, Sandeep N, said the traffic situation has become a regular concern for people living and working in the area. He pointed out that the increasing number of vehicles, coupled with in discriminate parking, has made movement difficult and created inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists. Bhumi N, a student at one of the educational institutions in the area, said the traffic congestion has also become a concern for students who travel through the stretch every day.
She said vehicles parked along the roadside often leave very little space for pedestrians, forcing students to move close to the traffic. During busy hours, crossing the road can also become difficult and risky. The Moodabidri Municipality has planned to install traffic and parking signboards in the area. While proper signage is necessary, residents feel that signboards alone cannot solve the problem. A sign is effective only when motorists respect it and there is consistent enforcement behind it. This is where the Traffic Police have an important role to play.
Regular traffic regulation, strict action against illegal parking, enforcement of no-parking zones and monitoring during peak hours can make a significant difference. A coordinated approach involving the Municipality, Traffic Police, local businesses, transport operators and residents is essential. Parking spaces need to be identified and properly managed, while vulnerable stretches should be kept clear of obstruction. Moodabidri’s growing population and economic activity are positive signs of development. But growth must be accompanied by better traffic management. The bus stand to Hanuman Temple road cannot con tinue as a daily bottleneck. The town needs action on the ground, not just in structions on boards. Ef fective enforcement, disciplined parking and proper traffic planning can turn this black spot into a safer and smoother corridor for everyone.
