‘BU should fund the construction’
Professor HN Ramesh (In-charge principal of UVCE)
Every year, fees collected from students who join newly as well as the annual fees of others are going to the university. Over the last four years, we have given Rs 61 crore to the university and we have all the records to show for this. The UVCE is a hundred years old institution and in these many years, what has Bangalore University given it? Not a single penny for any construction.
Salaries for UVCE teachers come from the block grant that the government releases every year to the BU, which the BU transfers to all our accounts. The salaries itself come up to Rs. 40-45 crore a year. The university does the job of transferring government funds to us. The university pays guest faculty and part-time workers that comes up to around Rs 2 crore a year, which is the only thing the university does.
If the mechanical block building has to be revamped, then it is the university that has to do it. Already, whatever funds came from the government and other sources have been used for renovation of the main building, along with some refurbishing activities of the mechanical block. But, to complete this, we need Rs. 83 crore as per the approved estimated budget, which has to be given by the university. Who else will?
We have not made any representation to the government or to the university because we are just teachers here and the university decides these matters. We ask the teachers and the syndicate who are questioning why the BU has to give money to the UVCE, where did the Rs. 61 crore given to the BU account by UVCE students fees go?
