A 23-year-old painter and his brother-in-law have been arrested by the police for committing theft at the latter’s friend’s house in K.P. Agrahara area. After committing the crime, the two left for Gadag and got tonsured to evade police arrest. Gold ornaments worth Rs 6.5 lakh have been recovered from the duo.
The police have identified the accused as Praveen, 23, and Surya, 19. The two had committed theft at a house using the door key that was kept in one of the windows. The family of the victims were regularly keeping the house keys in the windows while going out.
Surya was aware of this practice and had informed his brother-in-law Praveen. The two then hatched a plot and committed the theft in the first week of October.
“After the theft, the two had escaped to Gadag where they were arrested. The movements of the accused after the theft were captured in the vicinity of the victim’s house. Since Surya was familiar with the son of the complainant, the identity of the accused came to light,” said an officer on part of investigations.
The KP Agrahara police have registered a case and are further investigating. The police have advised the public to refrain from keeping the keys near the windows, or inside the flower pots or shoe racks.
