Chennai will continue to face rain fury

Red alert in TN capital; Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet to witness heavy rain; low pressure will move towards Andhra

Chennai: The India Meteorological Department  (IMD) has put Chennai on  a red alert for Thursday. The Meteorological Department has predicted  heavy rains for Chennai  and its adjoining districts  of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts on the day. It has  also predicted rainfall in  the other TN districts of  Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai  and delta districts of the  state.

A low-pressure area over  southeast Bay of Bengal  and adjoining North Andaman Sea now lies over the  southeast Bay of Bengal,  according to the bulletin  by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

The low pressure is  likely to move westwards  and reach west-central  and adjoining south-west  Bay of Bengal off south  Andhra Pradesh and north  TN coasts on November 18,  2021.

The state Andhra  Pradesh and Tamil Nadu  are especially likely to  bear the brunt of the impact.

The rainfall activity  across Tamil Nadu will  peak on Wednesday and  Thursday, with the latter expected to witness  isolated heavy showers  for the next 24 hours, and  then through Friday and  Saturday. 

However, the rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu  will peak on Wednesday  and Thursday, with heavy  to very heavy showers  particularly set to lash isolated parts of its northern  coastal region.

The Metrological Department has issued an  orange alert over the state  on November 17-18, with  the advisory urging residents to ‘be prepared for  rough conditions.It was  not just Chennai rains  talking of a heavy rainfall  risk in Chennai. A popular weather blogger also  tweeted about the possibility in his Tuesday morning  post: With 40 hrs to go till  18th November morning  (start of event). Slowly the  probability of heavy rains  for Chennai is increasing.  We can confirm it in 24  hrs, so need one more day  to freeze.” -(Agencies)

Heavy rains continue to lash Kerala

Idukki:  Heavy rains  continue to lash Kerala,  throwing life out of  gear as low-lying areas  get marooned.  Educational  institutions in a  few district have  announced closure  and a few university  examinations have  been cancelled.  Kerala continued to  experience heavy  rainfall on Tuesday  adding to the record  rainfall received in  the first two weeks  of October. The state  Disaster Management  Authority informed  that in the last 24  hours, the districts  of Kollam, Kottayam,  Thiruvananthapuram,  Idukki and Thrissur  were affected the  most.

The IMD has issued  Yellow alert in eight  districts including  Kottayam, Ernakulam,  Idukki, Thrissur,  Malappuram, Kannur,  Kasaragod and  Kozhikode for Tuesday.  (A yellow alert means  heavy rainfall between  6 to 11 cm.) -(PTI)

AIADMK leaders distribute relief for families

Chennai: AIADMK  coordinator O  Panneerselvam and  party’s co-coordinator K  Palaniswami on Tuesday  toured the delta districts  of Tamil Nadu to assess  the havoc caused by  rains to agricultural and  horticultural crops, and  distributed relief to the  affected families. The leaders began the  tour by visiting the floodravaged Buvanagiri  in Cuddalore district  and interacted with  the farmers. The two  distributed rice, essential  commodities, mats,  blankets, dhotis and  sarees to those displaced  by the floods.  The AIADMK leaders  visited the flood-hit  farms in Poovalai  village. -(PTI)
