4 Victoria Hospital employees charged with extortion

A 35-year-old woman has approached the police after she was reportedly beaten by four employees of the Victoria hospital, when she refused to pay them.

The victim’s mother is undergoing treatment in the ICU following a stroke. The accused had taken nearly Rs 76,000 from the family starting from the admission, allotting bed and after the operation. When a demand for another Rs 50,000 was made, the victim is said to have refused, as her mother is entitled for free surgery.

After the police complaint was registered, the victim is said to have been threatened by the accused that her mother will not return home alive.

The victim has been identified as Lakhsmi, a resident of Bhuvaneshwarinagar. She filed a complaint with the V.V. Puram police on Friday.

The complaint has been filed against Girish - ICU incharge, Nagesh also from the ICU ward, Ananda, PRO, and Ranjitha, ICU ward security guard.

The victim’s mother 55-year-old Yallamma was admitted to the hospital on January 21. Before that she was being treated at Nimhans. Since she had heart related issues, she was referred to Victoria Hospital.

“We have already paid Rs 76,000 for five days. During the admission, we paid Rs 10,000 as they refused to admit without any monetary benefits. My mother has undergone surgery. The four suspects are demanding for another Rs 50,000. On Friday morning, my sister was pushed on the floor and was kicked for refusing to give money. She was immediately taken to the Jayanagar General Hospital and a Medico Legal Case was registered,” Gopal, brother of the victim told NT. “The four have been booked for extorting money from a patient’s daughter,” said a police officer.
