A ‘jumbo experience’ for kids at Hunsur school
NT Correspondent
This was no ‘learning experience’ for the students of a Mysuru school or something pre-planned to enlighten them about the habits and habitats of elephants, in which the forests of Karnataka abound. It was more of a shock when the students and teachers of a government school in Hunsur taluk of Mysuru district, who had just started their daily classes, saw a wild tusker entering the school premises on Wednesday
A video of the wild jumbo entering the premises of the Nagapura Government School for Boys and Girls in Hunsur taluk of the district has now gone viral. This was no jumbo coming to seek admission for its wards, it was hunting for something erse-was it food or water?
The total duration of the stunning video is less than a minute and it seems to have been videographed from a distance. In the video, the wild tusker is seen standing before the main gate of the school for a while. Then it is seen entering the school through the main gate. Seeing the jumbo rushing inside the school, the fear-struck children are seen rushing inside their classrooms and locking themselves in. Maybe taken aback by all the running around and the sound of the kids, the jumbo is seen returning to the school compound and then making a quiet exit.
According to sources, some of the students on spotting the wild tusker in the school premises, warned other students and teachers and shouted at them to hide inside the classrooms which could have saved their lives.
Hunsur taluk is situated adjacent to Nagarhole National Park and the movement of wild elephants is quite common in the area. The jumbos usually don’t harm people if they are moving along with the herd. But lone tuckers have a tendency to attack humans, the sources added.
