BMRCL collects Rs 1 crore fine from mask violators

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) reached the Rs 1 crore milestone by way of penalties it collected from commuters who violated the mask rule within its premises inside the metro trains.

Despite a sharp decline in Covid-19 infections in Bengaluru, the authorities and health experts suggest that people continue to follow the Covid Appropriate Behavior (CAB) in public spaces. The BMRCL said that it had formed five teams comprising home guards, security staff and officials to crack down on commuters who do not wear a mask properly or follow the CAB. A fine of Rs 250 was levied for every violation with checks intensified within trains.

According to the BMRCL, a total of 10,113 cases were booked up to January 5 this year with a total collection of Rs 1 crore since Namma Metro resumed its services in 2021. While the authorities don’t see it as an achievement, they said government rules must be followed.

The BMRCL also added that after the state government lifted curbs, Namma Metro is seeing normal ridership of 3.2 lakh to 3.5 lakh commuters per day.
