A woman has been arrested in connection with the murder of five members of a family including four children at a house in KRS Village in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district Sunday last.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Lakshmi who allegedly had a relationship with Gangaram, a local businessman whose wife, Lakshmi (26), and three kids, Raj (12), Komal (4) and Kunal (4) were reportedly murdered with a machete. Another boy, Govinda (8) son of Gangaram’s brother who was incidentally staying with others at home on that night, too was allegedly murdered by her

The police said the accused had an illicit relationship with Gangaram for many years. She was said to be pestering him to marry her. Interestingly, she was known to the victim’s family and visited their house frequently. The accused had hatched a plot to wipe out the entire family of Gangaram since December last year so that she could marry Gangaram. She had reportedly obtained a machete and hid it in the bathroom before committing the crime.

On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, Lakshmi reached the house after coming to know that Gangaram was out of town. After dinner, she took out the machete to kill Gangaram’s wife and three kids but dropped the idea after Gangaram’s nephew Govinda came home. After waiting for everyone to sleep, she took out the machete and allegedly killed Lakshmi and her three kids. Govinda who woke up on hearing the screams, was suffocated to death by her.

After spending the whole night in the house, she disposed of the blood soaked clothes in the Varuna canal and returned to Mysuru going back to KRS village.

This case was quite challenging for the cops as there was not much evidence in the house. During the course of investigation, they stumbled on Gangaram’s alleged love affair with Lakshmi and worked on the lead.
