A 64-year-old man ended his life after he was forced to sell his dream house to pay off debts. The victim has been identified as Madesh, a resident of Platinum Apartment at Sompura Gate in Sarjapura.
He committed suicide by hanging from the tree at a park located in front of his sold house at Akshaya Green Garden in Sarjapura. Madesh was being harassed by the financiers and had to pay much more than he had borrowed. His wife has filed a complaint against the financiers holding them responsible for abetting his suicide.
Madesh had worked as a manager of a reputed silk sarees showroom and retired two years ago. The victim had purchased his Akshaya Green Garden plot around three years ago and built his house six months before his retirement.
He had exhausted all his savings in buying the plot and constructing the house, and applied for a loan. As there was some delay, he had requested the building contractor Mahendra to buy the materials for him, and promised to repay the money once his loan amount of Rs 15 lakh is sanctioned.
He had also borrowed some money from the three others, identified as Santosh, Mohan and Rajappa. In total, he was supposed to repay Rs 10 lakh to all the four.
“After getting the loan, the victim is said to have repaid the money to all the four. But except for the contractor, the other three accused started harassing the victim stating that he had taken Rs 10 lakh from each of them. Unable to bear the harassment, the victim reportedly sold the newly-built house and gave the money to the accused, which he was not supposed to give,” said a police officer.
After vacating his house, the family moved to a rented flat in Platinum Apartment. Upset over having to sell his dream house, the victim went missing for almost 10 days.
Later, he is said to have come near his house at Akshaya Green Garden and spent some time looking at the house. He has then committed suicide by hanging to the tree inside the park opposite to his house. The incident happened last week.
“Before taking the extreme step, the victim had written a death note and had kept it in his shirt pocket. After the suicide, the victim’s wife Nagarathnamma, 47, has filed a complaint against the three accused. The police are investigating the role of the three men against whom the accusations have been made,” the police officer added.
