State pounded by rain; 2 die

Davangere: Two people have been washed away in swelling rivulets in the last 24 hours in the state. A sixty-yearold man was washed away in rainwater at Nallur village in Channagiri, Davanagere district. The body is yet to be fished out. The police and fire personnel are searching for the missing man. In Chikmagalur, 50-year-old Ponnaswamy was washed away when he was crossing a small bridge. Due to the current, he was dragged away by the water.

The body was fished out of the water by cops.

Five members of a family had a narrow escape at Bandar in old Hubbali area in Hubballi, when a portion of the house collapsed on Saturday due to rain.

Meanwhile, there has been no improvement in the situation with the rains continuing to batter several districts. A number of villages are cut off with rains flowing above bridges. Farmers were unable to assess the damage caused to the cops due to water covering farmland from all four sides. The onion crop has totally perished in Davanagere, Chitradurga, Gadag, Haveri and Dharwad districts.

Yellow alert in North Karnataka

Hubballi: Rain continues to wreak havoc in various parts of North Karnataka region on Saturday causing huge loss to the farmers as standing crops including jowar, chilly, cotton and onion has been destroyed. According to the met department, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain in Belagavi, Dharwad, Uttar Kannada and Haveri districts for 2-3 days from November 20 and yellow alert has been sounded in these districts.

As many as 210 houses are damaged in Dharwad due to incessant rains as the district has received 167 percent more than normal rainfall. Crops in 7,390 hectares of farm land and 1,210 horticulture crops are destroyed.
