Green cover for barren patches at Cubbon Park

Here is some good news for Cubbon Park visitors. The barren patches on the park will soon be history.
The Bangalore Smart City Limited (BSCL) has taken up filling the dusty patches in the park with natural green paspalum grass. This will not only add to the park’s greenery, but will be convenient for the visitors to sit on the ground laden with lush paspalum grass.
“We have not taken up this work due to lack of funds. We sent a proposal to the BSCL authorities to fill barren patches at Cubbon Park with paspalum grass,” said Department of Horticulture Deputy Director (Cubbon Park) Balakrishna.
He said the BSCL has taken up many developmental works at Cubbon Park. “Many patches at Cubbon Park remained without grass cover for many years. Now, I am very happy with the BSCL authorities for taking up this work. Paspalum grass will be grown at all these patches,” he said.
Currently, the levelling of a patch at the entrance of Cubbon Park (near BSNL Office) and spreading red soil is in progress. “We will not use carpet grass. We are preparing the place for planting grass,” said one of the workers engaged in levelling the ground.
Panchakshari Hiremath of Nature First Eco Village told News Trail that all efforts have been made to fill up all the barren patches in Cubbon Park with paspalum grass.
“As of now, we are concentrating on spreading red soil on one of the patches that has no grass. We will mix manure too with the soil. The lawns with paspalum grass will hold rainwater during the monsoon,” Hiremath said, adding that preparation of the ground and planting of paspalum grass will be completed in two months.
BSCL assistant executive engineer Chandrasekhar said that all the ongoing works would be completed as early as possible.
Meanwhile, visitors have welcomed the BSCL’s initiative to plant paspalum grass on the barren patches at Cubbon Park. “Many people visit Cubbon Park along with children on Saturdays and Sundays. It would be better to grow grass on barren and dusty patches for the benefit of visitors,’’ said Selvamani P, a visitor.
Expressing the similar opinion, Nareshchandra S, a visitor, has said that he was very happy with the authorities for taking up developmental works.
“I want the horticulture department to provide more amenities such as drinking water and toilets, concrete or marble benches for the benefit of visitors,” he said.
