Budget funds likely for Jain queen’s fort

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has reportedly promised to include the rejuvenation of Chennabyradevi Fort near Biligaaru on Kargal-Bhatkal Road in Sagar Taluk of Shivamogga District, in the State Budget for the year 2022-23 to be presented on March 4.

Chennabyradevi, a Jain queen, had ruled the Sharavati Valley for long, during which time she came to be dreaded by the Portuguese.

The fort she built now lies in shambles. A delegation of journalists had met Bommai and appealed to him to take up restoration of the fort, which they said could be developed as an inspirational spot for youth.

According to history, the brave queen ruled the Sharavathi Valley between 1552 and 1602. She successfully defeated the Portuguese army that came to attack her dynasty for conversions and expansion. Though she was politically opposed to the Portuguese, she tactfully developed business relationships and sold spices, sandalwood and rice to them. She was bestowed with the title ‘Rainha da Pimenta’. The CM promised to release funds in the coming budget for restoration of the historic fort built by the brave queen.
