Bringing back the mortal remains of Karnataka medical student Naveen Gyangoudar from the war zone in Ukraine is the top priority of the state government, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, he said the government is committed to provide all necessary co-operation to the victim’s family and for this purpose, he is in touch with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Ukraine. The photograph of Naveen, who died in shelling by Russian troops in Ukraine, had been sent to the Indian Embassy in Ukraine for identification of the body so that it can be sent to India for the last rites. The assistance of the External Affairs Ministry is being sought for the early dispatch of the mortal remains to his hometown, the CM said.

Since the battle between Russian and Ukraine forces had turned fierce, the Central government is in touch with the Ukraine authorities to seek their opinion on shifting Indians to safer places, that too in groups. They have been asked to board trains from the nearest railway station and reach western Ukraine. Efforts are also on to airlift as many as people possible within the shortest time, the CM added.

The government will also try to find out about the health condition of Naveen’s friend who is said to be injured in the shelling. There are contradictory reports on this and they are being verified with the authorities concerned, Bommai said.
