Showing women the earning way with tailoring

Bengaluru: Domlur Senior Citizens’ Charitable Trust, in association with Planet Hope Asia Foundation, has started a vocational education course to empower women from economically weaker families. Shanthinagar MLA NA Haris inaugurated the training event.

“We have identified 25 women for the tailoring course. It is the first tailoring class batch. The trainees have to attend classes three days – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – a week,’’ said Domlur Senior Citizens’ Charitable Trust president V Krishnamoorthy, adding that the Trust members are grateful to MLA NA Haris for not only appreciating the initiative to commence the tailoring classes for women but also offering space at the Government High School for the training.

He said the duration of the tailoring training is six months. “We provide sewing machines for all trainees who complete the tailoring course successfully. They have to attend an exam conducted by the state government and those who pass the examination will get certificates that will help them get financial assistance from banks to start tailoring shops,’’ he said.

He said the objective of starting the vocational education course was to help women aged between 18 and 35 years who want to become self-reliant. “We have provided space and tailoring material for the women undergoing the training,’’ he added.

The Domlur Senior Citizens’ Charitable Trust is contemplating to start computer training and beautician courses in the “near future”. The Trust members have been working hard to lend a helping hand to needy families. The Trust members, in association with a few philanthropists, have supplied groceries to over 100 families for a year.

They have also rendered yeoman service to the needy during the Covid-19 pandemic by supplying food to thousands of people every day. As an encouragement and moral support, they supplied biscuits, masks and drinking water to Covid warriors at government hospitals in the city. “The process to identify around 50 needy families is on to supply groceries for a year.

We hope to start supplying the groceries soon,’’ he said. Meanwhile, the women who have applied for the training have appreciated the Domlur Senior Citizens’ Charitable Trust for opening the tailoring classes for women.

“I am very happy to join the tailoring classes. I have two children and cannot afford to work in other areas. After completing the training, I can earn money to support my family,’’ said Umashree M. Preethi K, one of the trainees, said that she wanted to become a fashion designer. “I have passed SSLC. I have joined the tailoring class to become a fashion designer in future,’’ said Preethi.
