Ohmium puts Bengaluru on map as nucleus of green hydrogen

Bengaluru: Ohmium ships its first “Made in India” Hydrogen electrolyzer unit to the United States, establishing India as the global hub for green hydrogen.

At the COP26 held in Glasgow recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that green hydrogen is a key component of India’s goal to achieve netzero emissions. Hydrogen is used in fuelcell operated vehicles as an alternative to fossil fuels.

The production of hydrogen, however, comes from fossil fuels. This is where India hopes to make a disruption, more so because the Energy Transition Council at COP26 stated that an instant transition to ‘clean energy’ is critical to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. India has voiced its keenness to scale up the production of green hydrogen, through technologies like Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzers, as is the case with Ohmium. It also hopes to mandate the use of green hydrogen in petroleum refineries and fertilizer plants.

Ohmium’s electrolyzer has been manufactured at the Bengaluru plant, which is India’s first green hydrogen electrolyzer gigafactory. An electrolyzer is a system that uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The Bengaluru plant was set up to reduce dependency on imports for electrolyzers.

“The first shipment of a product is a big moment for any company. This is especially exciting for Ohmium as well as all of our suppliers in India,” said Arne Ballantine, CEO and Co-Founder, Ohmium.
