Swiatek becomes new WTA World No.1 with Miami win
Poland’s Iga Swiatek clinched becoming the new world number one in women’s tennis on Friday by defeating Swiss player Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-0 at the WTA Miami Open. Swiatek will move into the top spot vacated by Australian Ashleigh Barty after the three-time Grand Slam champion announced her retirement earlier this week. “Pretty surreal,” Swiatek said. “On one hand, these are the most special moments that you’re going to remember for the rest of your life, but on the other hand, that match was just another match.”
Kyrgios stuns Rublev in 52 minutes; fined $25,000 for Indian Wells outbursts
Nick Kyrgios stressed Friday he’s at peace with himself after a day where both sides of the Australian’s character come into sharp focus at the ATP and WTA Miami Open. Aussie closed out an impressive 6-3 6-0 win over world No 7 Andrey Rublev in just 51 minutes to advance to the Miami Open third-round. Kyrgios has been fi ned $25,000 for nearly hitting a ball boy after smashing his racket and yelling an audible obscenity during his Indian Wells loss to Rafael Nadal earlier this month, the governing body ATP said on Friday. Elsewhere in the men’s draw, second seed Alexander Zverev beat Borna Coric 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The German will play either Grigor Dimitrov or Mackenzie McDonald next.
Mirza, Bopanna reach second round
Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna reached second round of women’s and men’s doubles respectively at the Miami Open on Friday. Sania with her Belgian partner Kirsten Flipkens beat Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and American Ingrid Neel 6-3, 7-6 (2) to set up a second round clash with seventh seeded American-Dutch pair of Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs. In the men’s doubles, Bopanna and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov won 6-7 (5), 6-2, [10-3] against Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Jean-Julien Rojer of The Netherlands.
