Listening to be clever: Deep listening is the art of suspending judgment and just immersing yourself in the sounds around you

NT Features

Listen around you. The world is full of sounds. What do they tell us? Deep listening is a process of listening to learn. You need a temporary suspension of judgment, and a willingness to receive new information – whether pleasing, annoying, or neutral.

The Indian Sonic Research Organisation (TheISRO) will be conducting a workshop titled, ‘The Art of Listening’ at the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) on April 9. In the workshop, participants will learn to heighten their awareness of surrounding sonic environments by exploring techniques such as deep listening.

Field recording
The workshop will help participants learn practical techniques of field recording, as well as how to use tools such as microphones, sound recorders and digital audio workstations. Participants will also be introduced to important works – both texts and audio pieces that deal with the subject matter.

The workshop is ideal for those interested in a deeper understanding of not just music and sound, but also to develop a practice of listening to oneself, others and the environment. No previous knowledge in audio or sound required. The workshop is free of charge and open to all above the age of 12 years.

Sound lab
The Indian Sonic Research Organisation is a Bangalore-based sound research laboratory dedicated to the proliferation of experimental music and sound art. They run an open community sound studio, where they build instruments, and learn and collaborate through artist-led workshops, performances and residencies.
