Purva Gandhi was all smiles when she walked to the stage to receive the gold medal during the Bengaluru Central University’s (BCU) first-ever convocation function on Monday.

The Jain College V V Puram student won the laurels for claiming the first rank in Bachelor of Commerce examination. “It was a wonderful experience. I am over the moon now,” said Gandhi, who is currently pursuing a course in Chartered Accountant.

Gandhi was among 77 students who received gold medals during the ceremony in which 41,768 students from different streams received their degrees.

Taqiya Khanum of Sivananda Sarma Memorial RV College (SSMRV Jayanagar), who bagged first rank in BBM thanked parents and teachers at the college for her success. “My parents were my pillars throughout all of this. They were supportive. As were my department head and principal,” she said. Khanum is currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at St Joseph’s Institute of Management. “I would like to work as finance head or finance manager in a government agency,” she said.

Mangaluru resident Joel Gonsalves, who bagged a gold medal in MA in Philosophy, plans to do a PhD in philosophy.

“I have influences from philosophers such as Socrates, Nietzsche and Descartes. Socrates because he’s just inspirational and his dictum, ‘All I know is that I know nothing’ is humbling in realisation. Nietzsche because he’s needed to break free from indoctrination and Descartes because he has a systematic approach, a method and a meticulous application of the same,” he said. Gonsalves is a teaching fellow at Krea University, Sri city (Tirupathi district).

Karnataka Governor and BCU chancellor Thaawar Chand Gehlot presided over the convocation. Former Chairman Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Chairman of Drafting Committee of National Education Policy (NEP) and Chairman of National Curriculum Framework, Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD), GOI Dr K Kasturirangan delivered the convocation address. Minister for Higher Education and BCU pro-chancellor CN Ashwath Narayan was also in attendance.
