‘Bengaluru a city of subcultures’

By NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: Former bureaucrat Chiranjiv Singh has described Bengaluru as a city of subcultures. While delivering a Ravi Sondhi Spirit of Bangalore Lecture 2022 titled ‘Bangalore and the Partition’ here on Friday, Singh claimed that partition in 1947 was not the misery, but the suffering and heartbreak after that was disheartening.

“It was not just the country which was split into parts, but the souls of the people were split. The country was dismantled and people from Punjab were looking for shelter across the country. Then Bengaluru was very generous in welcoming Punjabis and Sindhis."

“Cantonment was the settlement of outsiders and most of the refugees settled there and few Sindhis got their home in Malleswaram. We can call Bengaluru a city of subculture. The eastern part of Bengaluru is Telugu speaking. Refugees in the cantonment area speak Tamil,” he said.
