Bengaluru: Around 70 families have been struggling a lot to cope with the black spot on Pettigrew Street for the past three years. After repeated complaints to authorities concerned, they decided to beautify the spot on their own.

'“I have been discussing the menace of the black spot with my friend who advised me to contact his wife Habiba Subhan. I followed his advice and she agreed to guide us and also take up the responsibility to find workable solutions to all civic issues on this road,” said Mukhtar Sait, a resident.

Having succeeded in beautifying some of the worst black spots at Frazer Town, Habiba followed the similar method of involving residents and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Health Department. “I am very happy to be involved in this work. I want to thank the BBMP engineer for extending cooperation and also deputing pourakarmikas to clear debris and garbage from the spot,” said Habiba Subhan, a social activist.

All these years, residents were fed up with the accumulation of garbage and debris as soon as pourakarmikas cleaned the space. “All these days, we did not know whom to approach to fix this perennial problem. Now, we are happy with the BBMP Health Department for removing five to six auto-tipper loads of debris and garbage,” said Lakshmi Sudha N, a resident, adding that residents want to paint the compound wall adjacent to the black spot.

A few residents express their disappointment with Bharathinagar Police for not keeping an eye on those dumping debris and garbage on Pettigrew Street, situated right behind Bharathinagar Police Station.
