Council chairman Horatti joins BJP

Bengaluru: As expected, Basavaraj Horatti, Chairman, Karnataka State Legislative Council, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Tuesday.

Shah welcomed Horatti, a senior member of the Upper House, who has been associated with the Council for a record 42 years. In fact, the chairman had hinted at joining the BJP for the last many months but decided to finally make the plunge on Tuesday in the wake of biennial elections to the Legislative Council from the North-West Teachers’ Constituency which he has been representing for the last 40 plus years. Horatti was associated with the Janata Dal (Secular) for many years but had to resign from the primary membership of the party on being elected as chairman of the Legislative Council.

The BJP has already declared him as its candidate for the N-W Teachers’ Constituency and elections are likely to be held this month or early next month as the term of Horatti would end next month. He has been the voice of teachers in the Council and had served as Primary & Secondary Education Minister.
