Rains lash Mysuru, breach bridge, swamp houses with filthy water

Bengaluru: The heavy downpour in Mysuru since the last two days has wreaked havoc with rainwater entering several low-lying areas besides breaching a small bridge while roads are under kneedeep water in many new extension areas.
There has been intermittent rain since last Saturday because of the cyclone. On Monday night, heavy rain lashed the city resulting in the breach of a bridge adjacent to Nagalingeshwara Temple in Bogadi. Several residents complained about the entry of drainage water into their houses along with rainwater. This happened at Sharadadevi Nagar in Ward No 45. The residents remained awake the whole night in the biting cold to drain out the sewagerainwater mix from their houses.
With a Rajakaluve which was 60 feet wide, now reduced to 15 feet due to encroachment at Anand Nagar, the residents have accused the authorities of Mysuru City Corporation and elected representatives of turning a blind eye to the encroachment. They have warned of Mysuru going the Bengaluru way if the encroachments are not removed immediately before the onset of the monsoon.
At Kergalli, the roads are inundated due to lack of drainage facilities making it extremely difficult for two-wheeler riders to negotiate the roads. Several areas in the city remained in darkness the whole night as trees fell on electric cables. Power supply was restored only by Tuesday afternoon. With the Met office issuing a warning about heavy rain in the next two to three days, residents in low-lying areas are living in fear with no pre-monsoon preparations done by the MCC.
