Bengaluru: In a shocking incident at Central Bengaluru, two college students allegedly fell from the second floor of a shopping complex on Saturday. The incident took place near Brigade Road in the city when the students had visited the Park 5th Avenue complex to get some refreshments.
According to police sources, an 18 year-old girl lost her life and her male friend sustained severe injuries.
Police identified the deceased as Liya, a resident of Frazer Town. Her male friend has been identified as Chris Peter, 18, who hails from Andhra Pradesh and was currently residing near HAL in the city. It was revealed that both were studying at St Joseph College of Commerce in Bengaluru and pursuing second year of B.Com.
Preliminary investigations from the Cubbon Park police said that the incident occurred around 1:20 pm when the two had reportedly gone to the complex to get some juice. Later, in a statement to the police, Peter claimed that Liya had allegedly lost balance when they were walking on the stairs and fell from the window of the shopping complex’ second floor. The window was made of glass/ fibre sheet and did not have iron grills, he added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police S.D. Sharanappa said that following severe head injuries, Liya was rushed to National Institute of Mental Health and NeuroSciences (NIMHANS) in the city, where she was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Speaking to News Trail, a senior police officer said that Peter tried to save his girlfriend Liya as she tumbled down the steps, but he lost his balance and fell to the ground as well. Sources too claimed that it was Liya who had slipped from the stairs initially and Peter too fell trying to help her.
As Peter is undergoing treatment, he wasn’t able to divulge more information. DCP Sharanappa said he was in a state of shock. “The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be known. We will question Peter more about it later,” he added.
