Three Universities From India Among Top 200
The QS World University Ranking 2023 released on June 9 lists three Indian universities among the top 200. These are Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (Rank 155), IIT-Bombay (Rank 172), and IIT-Delhi (Rank 174).
This is the sixth consecutive year when Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has found a ranking within the first 200. However, IIT-Bombay’s ranking declined drastically from Rank 117 last year to Rank 172 this year. The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is a global higher education think-tank which compiles the world’s most-consulted university ranking portfolio.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been ranked No. 1 in the world for the eleventh consecutive year. The 2023 edition released on Thursday, the QS analysed a total of 2,462 institutions and ranked 1,422 institutions in the world.
Forty one Indian universities have found a place in the ranking, with 27 in the top 1,000, three in the top 200 and none in the top 100. The top 10 include 1-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US; 2- University of Cambridge, United Kingdom; 3-Stanford University, Stanford, US; 4-University of Oxford, Oxford, UK, 5-Harvard University, Cambridge, US; 6-California Institute of TEchnology (Caltech), 7-Imperial College, London; 8-UCL, London; 9-ETH Zurich, Switzerland; and 10-University of Chicago. Of the 41 institutions from India, 11 are IITs. Of the top 10, eight are IITs, one is IISC, Bengaluru and the tenth spot is bagged by Delhi University.
Jawaharlal Nehru University was at the tenth spot in 2022. O. P. Jindal University occupies 17th spot among the institutions from India, the first among the private universities. In the QS World University Rankings 2023, 16 of the 20 institutions selected for granting ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IoE) status by the Government of India have found a place.
These include 4 IITs, Indian Institute of Science, Delhi University, Anna University, University of Hyderabad, Jadavpur University, Banaras Hindu University, OP Jindal Global University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS Pilani, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and Jamia Hamdard.
Two of Chinese universities figure among the top 15. Peking University which was ranked 18th last year has jumped six places and has been ranked 12th in 2023 ranking. The Tsinghua University has ascended three ranks from 17 to 14th position this year.
Thirteen Pakistani universities have made it into the recently published QS World University Rankings for 2023, with the National University of Sciences And Technology (NUST) Islamabad being the top-ranked Pakistani institute out of 1,500 universities from around the world.
Among the overall 1,422 institutions, 201 universities are from the United States, 90 are from the United Kingdom while China has 71 of its universities in the ranking. Topmost position among Asian universities goes to National University of Singapore (NUS) taking 11th position. Arab region’s best university is King Abdulaziz University occupying 106th rank, a record high.
Africa’s leader is the University of Cape Town (237th rank). Only five from the African continent get into the list. Canada has 31 universities into the world ranking with McGill University occupying 31st position.
