Vijayapura: In the biggest ever programme to return stolen objects recovered from offenders to owners, the district police handed over Rs. 2.33 crore worth valuables to owners on Monday.
“In the history of the district, this is the first time that the police are returning such a massive quantity of valuables to the owners”, said Superintendent of Police H.D. Anand Kumar.
Addressing a press conference, the SP said the valuables were stolen in the last one year by over 450 accused. As many as 252 cases were filed in various police stations of the district in these acts of burglary and theft. The booty includes 2 kilogram of gold, over 4 kilograms of silver, cash worth Rs. 5.21 lakh, 110 motorcycles and 12 four-wheelers.
Congratulating the officials involved in detecting the cases, Anand Kumar announced suitable rewards for them. Asked why police took a year to return the valuables, he said that the police had to go through several legal procedures, including availing permission from the court. “ We have to take the cases to their logical end before returning the valuables to their owners”, he said.
He made it clear that since it is difficult for the police to completely curb offences with the limited force at hand, the cooperation of people is needed. They should follow the advice of police for safeguarding their valuables.
