Janata Dal(S) legislature party chief HD Kumaraswamy on Tuesday, demanded a special Assembly and Council session to discuss the three murders that took place in Dakshina Kannada district. He made the remarks before mediapersons at his orchard near Bidadi. The demand came a day after the former CM traveled to the district and handed over cheques of Rs5 lakh each to the families of the victims: Praveen Nettaru, Masood and Fazil. He kept up the attack on the BJP-led State government claiming that State Home Minister Araga Jnanedra is unfit for his portfolio. “People are uneasy in all parts of coastal Karnataka. The situation in Mangaluru has deteriorated to such an extent that people have lost all fear of the police. A person was attacked with a sharp weapon on the streets of Chikkaballapura. Houses are being burgled in broad daylight. Lives are being snatched away. All of this should be discussed in the House,” Kumaraswamy said. “The law and order situation has completely broken down in the state. The whole state has been shaken by the murders and crimes and people are living in fear,” he said. He also slammed the State government for what he regarded as inept handling of the rains and the damage that it caused. “He (Araga Jnanendra) ought to be ashamed of himself. He is not fit to be home minister. They have no humanity. What was the mistake of the family of Fazil? That young man saved the lives of 18 people. His family did not get relief even after he was killed. Investigation into his murder is also incomplete,” he added. “People have no fear of the Home Department. The youth are being lead astray. Our police department personnel are to blame for this,” he said. ‘Ashwath, BJP have double standards’ Kumaraswamy also came down heavily on Higher Education Minister Ashwath Narayan for claiming that the Opposition was “cooking their meals on the fire that had engulfed the state.” “Those who rise to the posts of ministers should think before they speak. Who started handing out Rs 25 lakh rupees? They have different rules and standards for similar situations,” he said. The former chief minister also expressed displeasure over Amit Shah’s upcoming state visit, claiming “it is in the BJP’s nature to do politics over murders just before elections.”
