No let up in rain fury; watelogging, tree falls keep BBMP on its toes

Heavy rain continued to batter the city on Thursday, with showers mostly in the afternoon. The BBMP received complaints of waterlog[1]ging on roads from areas in Yelahanka and Bommanahalli. Waterlogged streets affected movement on roads in Vaddarapalya near Horamavu, Kaggadasapura Main Road near C V Raman Nagar and Kadugodi near Whitefield.

On Kasturba Road, the metal trap that lets stormwater flow into the underground drain was damaged after rain. The drain trap was installed as part of the Bengaluru Smart City project. It is said that the trap got damaged after a tree branch fell on it following Thursday afternoon’s rain

A tree branch also fell in Jayanagar on Thursday. On Wednesday, a huge tree had fallen near National College, Basa[1]vanagudi. Local residents have alleged that unscientific work being carried out by the BBMP on National College Ground caused the ground near the tree to loosen, leading to the fall

Rain on Wednesday affected several areas including Kumaraswamy Layout, Sai Layout, Kaveri Layout, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and other localities situated close to major stormwater drains

Urban Development Minister Byrathi Basavaraj said the Chief Minister has sanctioned a Rs 1.75-crore grant to get the vent of the stormwater drain passing below the railway bridge widened.

The narrow vent has been responsible for flooding in areas including HBR Layout. The minister also spoke to residents during the inspection of areas surroundings K.R. Puram on Wednesday
