Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot has lauded the contributions of the Suttur Mutt for the overall development of the State and for making laudable contributions to social progress.
Speaking at a function organised in connection with the 107th jayanthi celebrations of Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Swamiji at Suttur Mutt in Nanjangud taluk on Thursday, he said the mutt was a centre of positivity and righteousness. This is one of the famous mutts of the State. Celebrating the birth anniversary of saints, sadhus and gurus has been an integral part of the culture of this great nation. The saints and sadhus have been playing a vital role in the promotion of unity and in introducing the heritage of Sanathan dharma.
The governor said Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Swamiji was a great thinker, visionary and a promoter of religion, culture and spirituality. The late seer had taken several positive measures to alleviate inequality, poverty and illiteracy in society. The social work began with the opening of a hostel for destitute students in Mysuru in the name of ‘Niranjnalaya’. Then he started JSS Mahavidya Peeta which has been trying to bring changes socially and economically in society and to make it self-reliant. The Mahavidyapeeta is providing quality education from kindergarten to professional courses not only in the country but also abroad. The education imparted by the mutt is aimed at ensuring empowerment, social equality and entrepreneurship skills for one and all. Under the aegis of Vidyapeeta, schools and colleges were started to impart knowledge, hostels to provide food and hospitals to provide healthcare. In 1953, the then Mysore ruler, Sri Jayachandra Wadiyar had honoured the seer with the title ‘Rajagurutilak’ in recognition of his yeomen service to society. In 1989, University of Mysore had honoured him with an honorary doctorate posthumously.
The current seer, Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji has continued this tradition and taken the name of JSS all over the globe, the governor added.
