A youth and his friend were arrested for allegedly killing his grandfather over property dispute near Surabhi Layout in the city.
The police have identified the accused as Jayanth, 20, and his friend Yaseen, 22. The deceased, C Puttaiah, was a retired lab assistant of a Kendriya Vidyalaya. He has four children and was residing alone after his wife’s death, police said.
Preliminary investigation by the police revealed that Jayanth wanted an equal share in the ancestral property and had been pressuring his grandfather for the same.
“As per the statements, the accused wanted the money to start a business and had applied for a business loan. He sought his grandfather’s help for the approval of the loan by acting as a guarantor. However when his grandfather refused, he plotted to kill him,” police said.
On August 17, the accused took the help of his friend and broke into his grandfather’s house and murdered him by smashing his head with wooden bar. He also stole his gold ring to make it look like it was a case of robbery.
Puttaiah’s son, Naveen, turned suspicious when he did not see his father that morning and reached his home to find him dead.
Scanning CCTV footage and investigating the technical details from the spot led to the arrest of the accused. Further investigation is underway
