With the recent surge in railway track-related deaths, the Karnataka Railway Police has decided to increase patrolling along the tracks in the city. In order to help the police personnel move along tracks at night, it has introduced ‘shoulder lights’.
These lights can be donned on the shoulder while its visibility range extends up to 500 metres and provides more clarity to night patrolling guards in terms of tracking, studying crime scenes, and preventing crimes from taking place. It also makes it easier for onlookers to note the presence of officials.
“Railway police patrol the railway premises during nights. Due to darkness and low visibility, they tend to gamble with their lives. During incidents such as suicides or accidents, it becomes harder to track the right spot of the scene,” a city railway police official said.
This lack of visibility often becomes a hindrance during surveillance and often leads to casualties. Railway tracks are deserted at certain stretches and they are often frequented by anti social elements.
So far, 200 shoulder lights have been distributed and each station has access to 12 shoulder Lights. It is decided that more shoulder lights will be purchased and distributed across the state of Karnataka in the coming days.
