In a shocking incident, a man attempted self-immolation outside Jigani police station on the city outskirts of the city late Thursday. However, the police rushed to his rescue and shifted him to Victoria Hospital here.

The person has been identified as Ratish, and the police said he has suffered around 50 per cent burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.

According to preliminary investigation, Ratish, a native of Chikkamagaluru, fell in love with Kavita, from Kollegal and eventually they got married and settled near Jigani. Ratish had been working for a private company while his wife took up a job as a nurse in Jigani government hospital. The couple have two sons, sources said. However, of late the couple often got involved in fights over personal issues. After a similar quarrel recently, Kavita called up her father from Kollegal requesting him to advice Ratish and sort out the dispute.

When Kavita’s father tried to settle the issue, Ratish was adamant and continued to disagree with them. Kavita and her father then decided to approach the police and left their house.

Ratish realised his mistake and followed them to the police station asking them not to approach the police. However, when they did not stop, Ratish took some petrol from his bike and poured it upon himself before setting himself ablaze.

The police rushed to his help and managed to douse the fire. He was then taken to the hospital, the police said. Further investigation is underway
