For about 63 families in a Rohingya refugee camp in Dasarahalli, their life became a nightmare as most of their tents were washed off by Bengaluru’s heavy rain. With no access to clean water or medicine, life in the camp came to a standstill, as was reported by News Trail on Friday.

Following that, on Sunday, a few volunteers and NGOs have started sending food and clothes to the camp. “After seeing the news report and photos on Twitter, we decided to provide food and clothes to the camp. We were able to provide relief goods to more than 100 people. The goods were distributed to people by Karimullah, who has been working with the refugees for years. We were also helped by several donors and volunteers who were able to collect a truck full of supplies in just two days,” said Moya Cady, who carried out the volunteer work.

James, a Rohingya refugee, said that other organisations like All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) have also approached them after reading the News Trail report. “After the relief work began, we were able to feed more than half of the people. Several NGOs and organisations like AICCTU also contacted me stating that they saw and read about the condition of the camp. The package sent by them will arrive in a few days. People in the camp are thankful for the work and goods,” James said.

James also stated that there are other Rohingya settlements in Bengaluru that are also adversely affected due to flooding. James said that he has already written to UNHCR regarding the issue but he didn’t receive any help. “It would be great if the government helps us in rebuilding tents that were destroyed in the rain,” he said
