Rains to continue for two more days

Bengaluru:

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday disclosed that rains would continue till Tuesday in Karnataka. “Light to heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of the state,” IMD said on Monday. “Light to heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of interior (Karnataka) and the coast,” IMD said about Tuesday’s forecast.

A similar forecast was made for Bengaluru. The weather department said that although the South West Monsoon (SWM) was withdrawing from the north and central India, it persisted in the south. They added that the wet spell was being aided by a few weather systems, especially a cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Kerala.

“A cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Kerala coast in lower tropospheric levels and a trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to southwest Bay of Bengal in lower tropospheric levels,” an official IMD statement said. It added that there would be widespread rainfall over “south interior Karnataka on 16th and 17th.”

A cyclonic circulation is an atmospheric motion in the same direction as the earth’s rotation, which is counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere. It pulls in warm moist air and causes rainfall. On Sunday, the highest rainfall in the state was received in Saligrama in Mysuru district (9 cm). This was followed by Bhagamandala in Kodagu district, which got 8 cm of rain and HD Kote in Mysuru district, which received 7 cm of rain.
