Bengaluru: Bruhat Benga - luru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to asphalt close to 3,000 km of roads in Bengaluru over the next five months. The move has followed after the Karnataka High Court on November 2 ordered the Chief Engineer of NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) state division to inspect the filling of potholes and road repair projects taken up by the BBMP.

Chief Engineer B.S. Prahlad of the civic body has said that they are planning to asphalt over 427 km of arterial roads in 90 days. Prahlad with reference to the most recent affidavit provided to the High Court said that BBMP has enough funding required to complete asphalting of 2,500 kilometres of ward roads but lacks the funds required to repair all the damaged roads.

BBMP will be using its own batchmix asphalt plant which will be combining aggregates, bitumen, and binder material in particular ratios and predetermined temperatures to fill the potholes. He further elaborated that the ward engineers have been told to document the number of potholes detected and filled, whose data will further be made available on their website.

BBMP follows the guidelines of Indian Roads Congress (IRC), an apex body of highway engineers in the nation. It has laid down several guidelines based on international practices, and those that have been specified by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)
