Bengaluru:

A debt-ridden techie from the city who was suspected to have drowned along with his two-and-a-halfyear-old daughter in a lake near Kendatti Village, was arrested by the police in the city. After allegedly smothering his daughter, Jiya Parmar to death, the accused Rahul Parmar, 45, had jumped into the lake along with her on November 15.

However, as the lake was shallow, he did not drown and escaped to Bangarpete and later to Salem, Vellore and then to Agra. He was arrested by the Bengaluru police while he was on his way to the city on Thursday. Kolar Superintendent of Police (SP) Devraj said that the accused was in deep debt due to which he had decided to commit suicide.

"When the CDR from his mobile phone was analysed, it was revealed that he had received several calls from people demanding repayment, including from the credit card firms and bankers. He had also received calls from his daughter's school for delayed fees and from his landlord about the nonpayment of rent," the official said.

Rahul Parmar, a native of Gujarat, had been an IT employee in the city but had lost his job a few months ago. Several weeks ago he had filed a police complaint alleging that several gold ornaments had been stolen from his residence in Bagalur. However, later it was found that he himself had pledged the ornaments in exchange for money. The police had inquired Rahul about the incident.

On November 15, after he took his daughter to drop her to the school, Rahul's wife Bhavya Parmar had filed a missing complaint at Hennur police station. When the city police traced his mobile phone, it showed Kolar location after which they alerted their Kolar counterparts. A car was seen parked near the Kendatti lake and on inspection, it was revealed to be Rahul's car. The police with the help of Fire and Emergency Service personnel in Kolar district recovered Jiya's body from the lake
