Security at BU campus, a matter of concern: Students

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: Despite the claims made by Bangalore University (BU) about adopting security measures, another sandalwood tree was reportedly felled and taken away from the Jnana Bharathi campus recently. Students from the university have expressed disappointment towards the management for allegedly failing to protect the valuable trees from miscreants and smugglers.

“Security remains a matter of concern at the campus,” a student from BU told the News Trail. Nearly 36 trees were stolen from the campus last year, and following this, the university procured three weapons—a pistol, a stun gun, and a rifle along with personnel to guard the campus.

However, both students and faculty members said that they have never seen any armed security person around the BU campus. According to sources, even the CCTV cameras installed around the premises are not being monitored regularly.

Incidents of sandalwood trees being stolen from the campus have been reported for decades. However, till date, no measures have been implemented by the BU authorities or the police to protect the trees.
