Monk The Young doesn’t try too hard to be different

With a title that sounds more like a Chinese film from Hong Kong, the new Kannada film Monk The Young does not have to try too hard to show that it is different. But like most Indian films, the film team could not do without the songs.

However, there are only two songs in the film and these were launched earlier this week by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) president Ba.Ma Harish and senior actor Sundar Raj. Harish praised the melodious compositions of Supreeth Phalgun and said that Kannada films which were once known for their melodious songs have changed with times but many people still prefer the kind of melodies of the 70s and 80s.

One of the two songs in the film sung by Aishwarya Rangarajan and written by Ashwin Shanbagh has gone viral within days. Sadhwini Koppa has sung the other song which also has lyrics by Shanbagh. Director M Surya explained the reason for the strange title of the film.

“This is a fantasy thriller set in a vintage era. It may be traditionally called a period film but I have tried to give it a vintage feel and look. The title therefore is something out of a cowboy film. Such films were made in Kannada and other languages in India in the 1960 and 70s. The new generation of audience will find this kind of a setting very unique since they are not exposed to the old films,” he said.

Five friends including retired Army officer Rajendran, Vinay Babu Reddy Shettihalli have joined hands to produce this film.
