The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Thursday confirmed that it would be organising its 29th annual general sessions on Saturday and Sunday in Bengaluru. The venue for the same will be Darul Uloom Sabeel Ur Rashad, the biggest madarasa or Islamic seminary in Karnataka. The board declared that the issue of waqf would also be considered in the meeting.
AIMPLB asserted that more than 3,75,000 emails had been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), with whom the waqf Bill is pending, “making it clear that the Indian Muslim will not approve the Waqf Amendment Bill at any cost.” In Islam, waqf is an endowment made by a Muslim in the name of God, which is usually land for charitable purposes. Auqaaf is the plural of waqf.
Public meeting also planned: In a related development, the board will hold a public meeting on “Protection of Shariat and Protection of Awqaf” at Eidgah Quddus Saheb (ground) in Bengaluru. The board held a press conference in Bengaluru on Thursday on the topic. AIMPLB General Secretary Maulana Fazlur Raheem Mujaddedi said: “The All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s 29th annual session will be held in Bengaluru. This meeting will be held at the Darul Uloom Sabeel Ur Rashad. The public meeting on the other hand will be held at the Eidgah Quddus Saheb ground.
The 29th session will go on for two days, that is 23rd and 24th (of November), which fall on Saturday and Sunday. There will be different sessions on the occasion.” “Our main agenda is the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. This Bill was introduced on August 8 in the Lok Sabha. Since then, we’ve been holding meetings on the protection of auqaaf. Waqf is an Islamic belief. We believe that there should not be any changes to it without consultations with stakeholders. The waqf amendments that have been passed have strengthened waqf. This is the first amendment, which will practically end the waqf. Obviously, we oppose this. A lot of political parties have supported us in this. We just want the ruling party to understand our pain and our message. Indian Muslims sent 3.75 lakh e-mails in just 13 days opposing this (waqf Bill),” he added.
Bill with JPC now: The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8 and referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) after fierce opposition to it. The Centre insisted that the proposed law wouldn’t interfere with the functioning of mosques.
