Around 20 residents of Gururaja Layout near Doddanekundi are running from pillar to post to get compensation from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for the recent rain damage caused to their homes.
“My mother fell down when my home was flooded with rain water. She suffered three fractures on her left hand. All our electronic gadgets were damaged due to flooding our home with rain water,’’ said Deepanwita Kar, a resident of Gururaja Layout.
She said that rice and other cooking material were also damaged. “I was feeding more than 100 stray dogs in and around Doddanekundi. Now, I am finding it difficult to do so,’’ she said.
The residents complain that BBMP authorities did not visit their homes to assess the damage caused due to rain water entering buildings. “I expected the elected representative and the BBMP authorities to visit this area. None of them have bothered to do so. I want the BBMP authorities to conduct a door-to-door survey to assess the damage caused recently due to heavy rains,” said a resident on a condition of anonymity.
Emphasising the need to provide financial assistance to those who lost home appliances and groceries when their homes were flooded with rain water, Arun Prasad, a social activist, has said that he has submitted a memorandum to the BBMP Special Commissioner for Mahadevapura Zone seeking suitable compensation to the rain-affected families at Gururaja Layout. “I want the BBMP authorities to take measures to prevent floods during monsoon. The BBMP authorities should ensure storm water drains free from debris, weeds, silt and encroachments to avoid flooding during the monsoon,’’ said Arun Prasad.
Sai Datta, a social activist who played a key role in imposing curbs on banners and hoardings in the city, has said the BBMP authorities have not paid compensation to around 30 families that were affected by the recent heavy rain. “I want the BBMP authorities to make arrangements for paying compensation without any delay. It will be better for the residents if the BBMP authorities take preventive measures to avoid flooding,’’ said Sai Datta. He said a few vehicles were damaged when HAL compound wall collapsed at Vignana Nagar ward due to heavy rain recently. Meanwhile, Mahadevapura Zone Joint Commissioner was not available for comment.
