Bengaluru: The chief commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Tushar Giri Nath, announced on Tuesday, May 23, that repairs and maintenance of all the underpasses in the city will be completed within 15 days.
During a media briefing, Giri Nath stated that B.S. Prahalad, the engineerin-chief of BBMP, had submitted a survey report on Monday following the tragic death of an Infosys employee in the f looded KR Circle underpass on Sunday, May 21.
"There are a total of 53 underpasses and 18 railway underbridges, and some of them will need to be temporarily closed for repair work. In certain areas, we will need to implement measures to prevent water from adjacent roads from entering the underpasses. All of these tasks will be accomplished within 15 days," he explained as per media reports.
Giri Nath mentioned t hat repai r work has already commenced on a trial basis at the KR Circle underpass, and he also identified the Le Meridian underpass as requiring repairs. Depending on the weather conditions, the underpasses will be closed and repaired accordingly.
Meanwhile, an internal report from BBMP regarding the death caused by flooding at the KR Circle underpass has absolved the civic agency of any responsibility. The report attributes the incident to sudden strong winds, which resulted in the uprooting of tree leaves and the breaking of branches, thereby affecting the d rainage system's capacity to handle the water flow.
