JD(S) to help Congress repeal BJP laws?

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: Congress, which has made no secret of its intention to repeal certain laws passed under the BJP State government, may yet again get support of the JD(S). Congress has a whopping 135 seats in the Assembly and requires a twothirds majority of 150 to repeal a law in the lower House. With JD(S)’ 19 votes, the party will be able to do so comfortably.

However, a major challenge is posed by the Council where the BJP makes up the single largest party with 35 seats while Congress has 26. Therefore, the JD(S)’ eight MLCs will play an even more pivotal role if any law is to be revoked.

The Council, which at full strength contains 75 members, is currently 68 strong because of resignations. Moreover, Congress is confident of bagging a decent number of the eight seats that will fall vacant by June. The Grand Old Party may snap up two of the three seats up for grabs under the legislative Assembly quota boosting their numbers.

Besides, there will be three more nominations and Congress is well placed in those seats as well. Among the laws reportedly being considered for revocation are the farm laws, which the Centre has already repealed, the anti-conversion act and stricter provisions of the anti-cattle slaughter law may well be set aside or amended
