Bengaluru: Traffic police monitoring vehicles speeding on the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway have registered 490 cases in the last two days, sources from the Ramanagara police said on Sunday.

While 174 cases were registered against vehicles that exceeded the permissible speed limit of 100 kmph, 137 cases have been filed against vehicles for violation of lane discipline.

According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the maximum speed limit on the expressway is set at 100 kmph for light motor vehicles and buses, while trucks should stay within 80 kmph.

Following an inspection by the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Safety) Alok Kumar, it was revealed that the expressway had witnessed 296 accidents since January out of which 132 were fatal.

In order to curb the escalating number of accidents on the expressway, mostly caused by violation of traffic rules, the Ramanagara Police started using radar speed guns installed in an interceptor to crack down on speeding vehicles.

The police also booked 47 cases against bikers who were found riding without helmets and 81 cases against four-wheeler drivers for driving without their seatbelts on. Further 51 cases were booked for violation of other traffic rules.

Ramanagara District Superintendent of Police (SP) Karthik Reddy said that the special operation to control speeding will continue every day in view of the increasing number of accidents on the expressway.

ADGP Alok Kumar said that more mobile radar speed guns will soon be deployed on other sections of the expressway, including Mandya and other areas, based on the demand until permanent solutions are implemented.
